Working With the Lunar Cycle in Everyday Plant Practice

A hand drawn lunar phase chart on parchment surrounded by dried flowers, a moonstone and a candle

When people ask why so many of our essences carry a moon in their name, the honest answer is that we did not decide to work this way. The plants did. Certain blossoms simply give more of themselves at particular points in the cycle, and after enough seasons of paying attention you stop arguing with them.

The four gates

You do not need a chart or an app to begin. You need four moments, and a willingness to notice what is different about each one.

  • New moon: setting, seeding, quiet asking. This is when we begin new blends and let intentions form before they are spoken aloud.
  • Waxing moon: gathering, building, drawing toward. Good for essences meant to increase something, courage, warmth, magnetism.
  • Full moon: revealing, ripening, completion. Nearly all of our strongest heart remedies are prepared in full moon water.
  • Waning moon: releasing, clearing, resting. This is when we make the essences that help people put something down.

Preparing under moonlight

A flower essence is made by floating fresh blossoms in clear water and allowing light to carry the plant's energetic signature into it. Sun preparation is bright and direct. Moon preparation is slower, cooler, and reaches the parts of us that only open in the dark. The Hunter Moon essences in our shop were all made at twilight, in the narrow window when the sun has set but the moon has not yet fully claimed the sky.

Healing is found in all things, both seen and unseen.

Start with one cycle. Keep a small notebook by the door. Write one line each night about the moon and one line about yourself. By the third month you will not need us to tell you what the cycle feels like, because you will have your own record of it.
