People arrive in Arizona expecting emptiness. What they find, if they stay long enough to look, is a landscape of specialists. Every plant here has solved an impossible problem, and each solution is a teaching.
Palo Verde
The green tree photosynthesizes through its bark. When conditions get hard it drops its leaves entirely and keeps making food anyway. As an essence it speaks directly to self judgment, to the belief that you are only worthwhile in your most productive form.
Brittlebush
The first gold across the hillsides after a wet winter. Brittlebush, which we prepare as Wild Sun Spirit, is the ally for the moment right after survival, when it is finally safe to want things again.
Desert Lavender
Silver leaved and softly aromatic, found down in the wash bottoms where water sometimes runs. It regulates. When someone has been doing deep spiritual work and cannot quite land back in their body, this is what we reach for.
Hollyhock, mugwort and jasmine
Not native to the desert, but long naturalized in the gardens we tend here. Hollyhock stands guard at the edge and teaches boundaries without armor. Mugwort opens the dreaming. Jasmine sambac, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, is the ally that shaped this whole practice.
Go outside. Find one plant near where you live, and visit it for a month without asking it for anything. That is where every relationship in this apothecary began.
